Comet Machholz 1986 VIII is a periodic comet with an extremely eccentric orbit (e = 0.958) and it has the smallest perihelion distance (q = 0.126 AU) of any known short-period comet. In late June 1986, when the earth passed through the orbital plane of the comet, the comet exhibited an antitail, which has been interpreted as dust left behind in the orbital plane from an earlier outburst in April. During the course of routine astrometric observations of the comet, a photography was obtained within two hours of the passage of the earth through the orbital plane. Digital image processing of this photograph has revealed the antitail clearly.
