There has been increasing interest recently in spacecraft designed to orbit planetary satellites. These future missions would presumably begin with a tour of the planet's magnetosphere followed by a low altitude satellite orbit. Radiation environments along satellite orbits can become very attenuated close to the body for various reasons. At Europa, we have seen that the presence of the moon reduces the energetic electron intensities present just above Europa's polar and leading hemisphere [1]. The presence of an internal magnetic field of Ganymede also creates reduced charged particle intensities in a different manner. Using previously published data taken close to Ganymede's surface [2], and other Galileo spacecraft data, we will estimate the impact of satellite shielding on the radiation environment of Ganymede. We will also review our previous work on the Europa environment and discuss consequences for other satellites.
