Data from the ISEE 1 satellite are utilized to study the response of the configuration and field strength of the near-earth magnetotail lobe to changes in the solar wind parameters. It is found that the tail lobe expands during disturbed times and that this expansion is particularly evident in the dawn and dusk flanks. The lobe field strength is represented as a function of geocentric distance. Regression analyses between the lobe field and the solar wind parameters reveal that the solar wind dynamic and static pressures and the southward IMF component are almost equally important in determining the lobe field strength. These findings are used to discuss some of the characteristics of solar wind-magnetosphere coupling. During geomagnetically active times the total magnetic flux in the near-tail lobe is estimated to be 6.0 x 10 to the 8th Wb.
