An analysis of visual and downcoming electron flux measurements from a zenith-looking, 16 channel, electron spectrometer on a DMSP/F2 satellite, during three passes (which occurred during periods of substorm activity), over the northern auroral zone, in the midnight MLT sector, is presented. A description of the satellite particle detector and the collected electron data of two formats are given. Average electron energy, total directional electron energy flux, total directional electron flux, and corrected geomagnetic latitude at 100-km altitude were included in the measurements. It is concluded from the data collected, that (1) on the poleward edge of the auroral oval, during periods of geomagnetic activity, intense fluxes of relatively low energy electrons were observed; (2) in inverted-V regions, the electron spectra sporadically displayed both a relatively monoenergetic beam at energies above a kV and a narrow peak at energies of several hundred eV; (3) in the region of diffuse auroras, the electron distribution was normally quasi-thermal; and (4) in regions close to the equatorward boundary of the auroral oval, intense fluxes of low energy electrons were observed.
