Nonstationary magnetic reconnection is investigated in the framework of the Petchek approach. It is shown that, under the conditions examined, the plasma is accelerated by shock waves to Alfven velocity, and the accelerated plasma and the reconnected magnetic flux are transported along the current sheet in compact formations, i.e., FR regions. A solution to the magnetic-reconnection problem in the diffusion region is then obtained, and is asymptotically matched with that in the convective zone. As a result, a Petchek condition is obtained that relates the behavior of the plasma conductivity in the vicinity of the X-line to the global characteristics of the reconnection.
