A major, long-term astronomical study of distant clusters of galaxies in the Southern Hemisphere is discussed. The project has the ultimate aims of studying clusters at various distances and of different types in order to detect possible evolutionary effects and to use the resulting improved statistics of the spatial distribution of the clusters to increase knowledge of the large-scale structure of the universe. Several hundred of these clusters have been identified on ESO Schmidt plates (6300-7000 A) and software is being developed for the separation of stars and galaxies and for automatic, objective evaluation of cluster parameters in order to provide as uniform a sample as possible. Deep CCD frames have been obtained for about 25 clusters which will allow photometric calibration and the identification of fainter cluster members. Digital spectra have been obtained for the brightest galaxies in some of these clusters and redshifts of between 0.05 and 0.37 were observed.
