The basic gain and pointing characteristics of millimeter-wave radio
telescopes are described in this paper. Formal definitions of relevant
telescope parameters are given. Performance limits set by conventional
technology are discussed and compared with measurements of existing
telescopes. Methods are also suggested for minimizing pointing errors.
