The mineral and Fe, S and N contents of enstatite meteorites and thermodynamic properties of titanium chromium and silicon nitrides and silicon oxynitride are reviewed in order to determine conditions for the formation of the meteoritic mineral osbornite (TiN), sinoite (SiN2O) and carlsbergite (CrN). Differences in the mineral compositions of the various types of enstatites are pointed out, and the thermodynamic properties of the minerals are discussed on the basis of literature data. A thermodynamic analysis of mineral equilibria in the Ti-N-O, Cr-N-O and Si-N-O systems at 800 C is then presented which shows that, unlike osbornite, sinoite is stable, only within a narrow range of nitrogen and oxygen fugacities, which accounts for the finding of sinoite only in one type of enstatite.
