We report investigations of the response of geometrically-metastable superconducting devices under irradiation, demonstrating that the behavior differs significantly from that under normal variation of external magnetic field at constant temperature. The results are interpreted within the context of hotspot formation and the ``explosive nucleation'' model of Shapiro, and the possible relationship between measurements and the Kibble-Zurek mechanism of topological defect formation indicated. .
