Flat spectrum sources are characterized by complex spectra, flux variability and small angular size. The extended structure of compact sources can be summarized as follows: (1) at least 30% of compact sources contain nearby associated extended emission; (2) the range of structures found is very broad, with haloes, jets and blobs often present simultaneously; (3) the structure is much more asymmetric than steep spectrum sources, with the flux ratios between opposite lobes usually exceeding 5:1, and often exceeding 20:1; (4) haloes are found in only a few sources; and (5) The position angle is within 20 deg of the very long base core structure in those sources where the latter information is available. In two sources (3C345 and 3C454.3) bridges smoothly linking the milliarcsecond and arcsecond structures are seen. The compact sources are likely to represent an early evolutionary phase in the life of a radio source.
