Measurements of the shape of the UV continuum are presented for a large number of QSOs. It is found that the near-UV spectral index alpha(UV) is remarkably independent of luminosity over a range of four orders of magnitude. Earlier reports that alpha(UV) seems to depend slightly on redshift are verified, but most of the correlation may be due to optical selection effects. The results are incompatible with the claimed correlation of the optical spectral index with luminosity. No correlation of Ly-alpha equivalent width with alpha(UV) is found. There is a very small dependence of the spectral index on the radio properties.
