The acceleration of the Local Group inferred from IRAS galaxies agrees well in direction with the Local Group motion relative to the microwave background and, if IRAS galaxies trace the mass, this indicates that the universe has a density close to the critical value. A deep (0.6 Jy) redshift survey of IRAS galaxies shows that the predicted motion of other galaxies also correlates quite well with those observed, giving a largely independent confirmation of a high value for Omega, in contrast with earlier dynamical studies using the Local Supercluster. While the dynamical state of the superclusters revealed by IRAS is in generally good agreement with the inflationary prediction, statistical measures of the large-scale clustering show that there is more large-scale structure than predicted in the standard cold dark matter model.
