A prototype system to evaluate the use of transputers as a parallel-processing element for real-time analysis of data from a Cerenkov imaging camera is described. The operation and the benefits resulting from such a system are described, and the viability of an application of the prototype system is discussed. It is demonstrated that real-time on-line analysis with a transputer is readily feasible. By extrapolation to multitransputer systems, processing times decrease linearly with transputer multiplicity. A transputer-based preprocessor also offers virtually unlimited flexibility in task implementation.
