The extended HEGRA - detector (High Energy Gamma Ray Array) at La Palma is in operation with 100 scintillation counters since August 1989. More than 3 x 10 exp 7 events have been recorded at an energy above 0.7 x 10 exp 14 eV. The overall angular resolution of the array is better than 0.8 deg. The observation of shadowing of ultra high energy cosmic rays by the moon and the sun confirms with the predicted resolution and the correct alignment of the detector.
