Although IUE has certainly made great contributions to solar-system science, its greatest impact has been in the field of galactic astrophysics. The most important elements in the Universe - hydrogen, helium, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen - all produce strong spectroscopic signatures in the UV; signatures which one can use to probe the physics and chemistry of an enormous range of objects.
