A review is presented of observations of interstellar solid carbon monoxide. The infrared observations and their implications are discussed and the question of the degree of CO depletion indicated by the observations of both gas phase and solid state CO is examined. Then the possibility of CO detection by means of solid state absorption or luminescence in the ultraviolet is assessed.
