The evolution of two interacting sunspot groups of different ages is traced over a period of three days. The photospheric velocity field is obtained and compared with the general evolution of the region in an attempt to better understand the conditions that lead to flare activity and filament formation. It is shown that the observed photospheric motions can generate dc electric currents, which, in effect, could lead to energy storage.
