Synthetic spectra of the fundamental bands of HCN and CO have been calculated for a selection of both photospheric and photospheric-chromospheric models. Models with basic stellar parameters close to those of the well-observed cool carbon star TX Psc were used for the photospheric part of models. It is found that HCN lines are formed at or inside the temperature minimum and are insensitive to the presence of a chromosphere. Lines of CO are more sensitive to the chromospheric temperature rise. The CO lines display an emission peak which is not observed in all homogeneous models. It is concluded that the atmosphere is not homogeneous unless the chromospheric temperature rise occurs at much greater heights than in present models. The filling factor for the warm material is less than 10 percent.
