A rigorous treatment of the violent relaxation phase of a large self-gravitating stellar system is made in the framework of the analytical dynamics. In the regime in which the coarse-grained virial theorem can be applied, the stellar system can be considered a mixing system. The consequent instability of the Anosov flow leads to the evaluation of the violent relaxation time scale.
