In this note, we present some theoretical results related to the problem of the orbital evolution of Earth-approaching binary asteroids as a result of encounters with the Earth, that allows us to throw some light on the problem of the validity of the impulse approximation. Our theoretical results confirm those found numerically by Farinella & Chauvineau (1993).
