VLBI observations of M87 with four antennas at 13 cm wavelength indicate
that the large-scale jet extends inward to the core. The presence of the
jet within several light-years of the currently inactive core indicates
that either the source has been active in the recent past or that the
core supplies energy to the jet even in the quiescent phase.
