The Synchro-Compton radiation arising from the interaction of free relativistic electrons with a plane electromagnetic vacuum wave of arbitrary intensity and linear polarization is investigated quantitatively within classical electrodynamics and neglecting radiation reaction. Starting with the integral representation of the distribution of the scattered radiation in frequency and angle, it is shown that in the case of a linearly polarized incident wave, complex contour integration methods together with appropriate asymptotic techniques yield an accurate representation of the differential cross section in closed form; this representation is uniformly valid for arbitrary initial electron momentum, arbitrary intensity of the strong wave, arbitrary direction of observation and throughout the range of the emitted high harmonics. For purposes of comparison, a nonuniform asymptotic approximation in terms of a simple combination of elementary functions is derived; this is found to give a sufficiently accurate description of the cross section as a function of its seven variable parameters in the most interesting range of those frequencies for which it is largest.
