Observations of Mars taken around the oppositions of 1975 and 1978 are discussed. Deviations from the right ascensions and declinations predicted by the American Ephemerides and the revised ephemerides of Seidelmann (1978) were determined during two astrolabe campaigns undertaken jointly at the San Fernando and Paris observatories in 1975-1976, and in the winter of 1977-1978. Significant deviations are noted for the measured right ascensions with respect to both sets of ephemerides, although those with respect to Seidelmann's are somewhat smaller, while deviations in declination are near zero. Analysis of a possible phase effect in astrolabe and optical observations reveals the presence of such an effect in the astrolabe observations.
