This study considers first the theoretical determination of the effective magnetic field in an oblique rotating and magnetic star. An analytical expression for the variation of the effective field is derived for a surface distribution of a magnetic field that is axisymmetric about an axis through the stellar centre, but that is not necessarily irrotational. Subsequently, it is shown that the effective-field observations only contain partial information on the surface distribution of a magnetic field if it is assumed to be axisymmetric but not irrotational.
