The paper discusses the presence of He I absorption features in the spectra of type I supernovae (SN I) by reexamining a previous identification of those features in the spectrum of supernova 1972e and by using additional data on this star. The analysis takes into account the following properties of SN I envelopes and spectra: (1) temporal constancy of the positions of the absorption features, (2) two temperature curves in the central remnant, (3) accumulation of atoms in metastable levels, and (4) stratification of elements in the envelopes. The analysis is shown to confirm the presence of strong He I lines at 5876 A and 7065 A in SN I spectra and to provide a natural explanation for the absence or weakness of other He I absorption features. Changes in the spectrum of 1972e are investigated which were manifested by an increase in UV temperature, an increase in the intensity of the He I absorption features, and further enhancement of two N II multiplets. The important role of helium and nitrogen in SN I envelopes is confirmed.
