Phototelemetry on Mercury, obtained by means of the Mariner-10 space probe, made it possible to study the planet's geologic history. The fact that its mean density is the same as the Earth's (5.5 g/cu cm3), and that its size is small (the diameter of Mercury is 4880 km--i.e., more than one-third that of the Earth) had resulted in the initial presumption of a unique history in the development of Mercury's surface. Instead, a striking similarity to the Moon's surface was discovered. The Mariner-10 research made it possible to study optical properties of the surface, craters and circular basins, plains and specific relief features of Mercury. It was established that there are large circular basins and craters on the Moon, Mars, and Mercury; this indicates the uniformity relief formation processes. An asymmetry is observed in the distribution of the basic surface subdivisions--heavily cratered areas and plains. This pecularity is accepted as a common formation feature for Earth Group planets.
