While nanodiamonds (NDs) are an abundant constituent of certain meteorites, the origin of these particles is still uncertain. The possibility that diamonds could be a component of interstellar matter was first suggested by Saslaw & Gaustad (1969). Isotopic analysis indicates that the NDs extracted from primitive carbonaceous meteorites may have been formed in supernovae (Anders & Zinner 1993) or other astrophysical environments although there is also the possibility that some of these particles could have originated in the early solar system (Dai et al. 2002). The detection of NDs in the interstellar medium is therefore of great interest but is complicated by a lack of intrinsic absorption because of the high symmetry of the diamond lattice. ND particles are, however, highly reactive resulting in the adsorption of a variety of surface species in laboratory samples and the IR spectrum of ND samples is then dominated by vibrational modes of these adsorbates. As spectral features deriving from these adsorbates are similar to those seen in other chemical compounds containing the relevant chemical groups, they are not particularly useful in the detection of interstellar ND particles. This situation will be reviewed in the light of laboratory spectra of simulated ND material. In addition, the apparent detection of emission lines from NDs in certain sources will be discussed.
