The SAS 3 satellite detected an X-ray source whose coordinates coincide with those of the close binary system Beta Persei (Algol) with an accuracy of about 1 arcmin. It is shown that the observed X-radiation is apparently produced by gas heating behind a shock front formed when a gas jet from Algol B strikes the surface of Algol A. Beta Persei would thus represent a class of X-ray sources in which there is accretion on to a normal star rather than a compact object. It is noted that the accreting gas in this system cannot form a disk, but flows instead in the form of a jet. Several observational tests are discussed for verifying the correctness of the proposed model for the Beta Persei X-ray source.
