A century of Mars surface observations are examined for inferences on Martian great dust storms (GDS) and recession of the south polar cap (SCP). Concomitant dissolution of the SCP and extended prolonged GDS is reported on two occasions only: in 1956 and in 1971. No evidence is found for such striking phenomena occurring separately over that time. A cause-effect relationship is suggested, but no specific explanations are offered.
