We present new evidence that argues strongly in favour of single-degenerate progenitors for type-Ia supernovae, and demonstrate that these and future observations are even capable of significantly improving our knowledge about their formation channels. The non-degenerate donor stars that remain after a single-degenerate type-Ia supernova have been the source of intense debate and recent, though unsubstantiated, claims have been made as to a successful detection. We argue that two known populations of stars are unlikely to have been descended from any other kind of event (and that the alternatives would also be intrinsically interesting). Our analysis of the available data currently suggests that the supersoft channel is not excluded, though modifications are needed to the currently favoured picture that suggest new information about the ignition conditions for SN Ia. We also discuss what may be achieved using future datasets.
