The supernova which appeared in AD1006 is unique in history for its brilliance (compared with the Moon in brightness!), duration of visibility (some three years) and the interest it aroused. About twenty separate records of the star are preserved from various parts of the world: China, Japan, the Arab world and Europe. In this paper the historical records of SN 1006 will be summarised. Brief reference will also be made to the other medieval supernovae of AD 1054 and 1181. The prospects of uncovering further records of galactic supernovae in ancient and medieval history will also be discussed.
