The Mare Orientale, which is situated on the moon's western limb, is composed of three mountain girdles and a lava-filled central basin. Questions concerning the origin of the features in and around the Mare Orientale are discussed, taking into account a theoretical sequence of events for the formation of the structure itself. Attention is given to scarp-craters, submarine calderas, subradial lineaments, minor volcanic activity, terrestrial counterparts to the lunar structure, and aspects of composition.
