Technique for controlling the temperature of the Far Utraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) Instrument is described. This instrument is being designed to function in a circular earth orbit while collecting high resolution spectral data between 905 and 1195 Å. Since FUSE has to be highly sensitive, the instrument's optical bench has to have good dimensional stability which is synonymous with good temperature stability. Detailed description of the instrument's thermal control system is given. Also the general thermal design philosophy is discussed. The structural/thermal/optical analysis of the FUSE system, which is described, shows that UV radiation reaching the detectors has the required resolution. Also described herein are the challenges that had to be overcome to meet NASA's new policy of doing things faster, better, and cheaper.
