SDSS J0836+0054 (z=5.774) is one of the highest redshift quasars known at present, and the only one at z>5.7 identified with a previously known radio source. With dual-frequency phase-referenced Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations, we were able to show that the radio emission from this quasar is essentially confined within the central 40 pc. We compare the properties of this unique Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) with those of its lower-redshift counterparts. We discuss the implications of its luminosity and compact radio structure. In line with other recent observational evidence, our results support the striking similarity between the AGNs at z~6 and at lower redshifts. Our results together with other data on the source confirm that radio-loud quasars appear to be in full action already at 1 Gyr after the Big Bang.
