Marginal magnetic smooth zones occur only along continental margins where these are oblique (not normal) to the regional fracture-zone trend. This relationship suggests a simple geometric mechanism which can generate marginal smooth zones and abyssal smooth zones during times of typical reversal history. The mechanism provides an explanation of ``slope anomalies'' and other smooth-zone characteristics, and casts doubt on the validity of using smooth zones as evidence for long fixed polarity intervals.
