This paper describes the evolution of the existing CCD Data Acquisition
System (DAS) at Lick Observatory, and its influence on the design of the
CCD DAS currently under development for Keck Observatory. Tradeoffs
between various types of interfaces between instrument computers and CCD
controllers are also explored.
