Studies are described examining the temporal and spatial signatures of individual ionospheric storms with sudden commencements as revealed by the European network of vertical-sounding measurements. Use is then made of computer contouring techniques to produce snapshot maps of foF2 and M(3000)F2 for different epochs. Comparisons with the local monthly medians enable the storm developments to be studied. Integral parameters quantifying the total area deviation from the norm are proposed and these are used to examine the energy input changes at different phases of the storms.
