The present 2D bi-ion fluid and hybrid code simulations presently used to study the interaction of the solar wind with the atmosphere of Pluto at about 30 AU take into account the fact that the characteristic size of the interaction region is much smaller than the pickup radius of the planetary ions, due to the weak magnetic field and strongly reduced ionization rate of planetary ions at such great distances from the sun. Only for the largest production rates found in the literature, does the detached bow shock predicted by one-fluid mass-loading models emerge.
