The Giotto spacecraft has yielded LF wave observations for the weakly active Comet Grigg-Skjellerup; many of the waves are at frequencies close to the local water group ion cyclotron frequencies of both the magnetic field and plasma density over a wide region around the comet. A cross-analysis of magnetic field-derived electron parameters reveals a compressive wave component even at large distances from the nucleus. Quantitative agreement with these data is achieved by a theory of electromagnetic instabilities that are driven by the distribution of the newborn ions.
