It is a widely accepted paradigm that there are two types of solar energetic particle (SEP) events: impulsive and gradual (Cane et al. 1986, Reames 1988). However there are clearly hybrid events that have durations typical of gradual events, but compositional signatures, such as Fe/O, that are more like impulsive events. One proposed explanation for the increased heavy abundances is that the shocks that accelerate SEPs in gradual events preferentially pick up particles in the suprathermal tail that result from earlier impulsive events (Tylka et al. 2005). If true, there should be a correlation between the SEP Fe/O composition and prior activity on the Sun. In this presentation we look at correlations using composition signatures of SEP events at different energies and x-ray activity at the Sun for different timescales prior to the SEP events.
