Some properties of compact extragalactic X-ray sources are discussed. Attention is restricted to Seyfert galaxies and sharp-emission-line galaxies. The basic structure of Seyfert nuclei derived from optical observations is reviewed, the overall continuous spectra and likely emission mechanisms of Seyfert nuclei are examined, and correlations between the emitted energies at different frequencies are considered. An attempt is made to delineate the spatial scales of the material emitting in the various wave bands and possible relations to the thermal gas responsible for the optical emission lines. Characteristics of sharp-emission-line galaxies as a group are studied, and similarities to the more powerful Seyferts are noted.
