The A-1, A-2, A-3, and A-4 X-ray instruments aboard HEAO 1 are described. Special attention is given to the performance, sensitivity, and resolution of the A-1 instrument. The scan summation process for the A-1 instrument is discussed, along with some results obtained for black-hole candidates, X-ray bursters, and X-ray pulsars. It is noted that the HEAO 1 sky survey should detect about 1000 X-ray sources
