The paper reviews measurements made by Copernicus and Ariel 5 instruments of two types of compact galactic X-ray sources: (1) sources with properties similar to the first identified source, Sco X-1 and (2) those associated with early stars (type O and B). Sources have been studied over extended periods in order to measure the regular periodicities in their X-ray emission. Observations are also included of the Cyg X-1 source, which is probably the first black hole discovered in the Milky Way. X-ray emission, coincident with a radio outburst, from a nearby bright star, HR1099, is also reported.
