Spectrophotometers on the Venera 11 and 12 descent probes recorded spectra of the Venus dayside sky (at wavelengths of 4500-12,000 A) and the angular brightness distribution of scattered radiation (in four filters at wavelengths of 4900, 7100, 10,000, 13,000 A) at heights from 65 km to the surface. The spectra show CO2 and H2O atmospheric absorption bands, as well as absorption in the blue-green probably due to gaseous sulfur in the lower atmosphere. The H2O/CO2 abundance ratio is approximately 0.00001 in the low-scale-height region; if the sulfur identification is correct, its abundance is of the order of 10 to the -8th in the same region. About 6% of the total solar flux reaches the planetary surface. The floor of the cloud deck is near the 47-48 km level; the clouds exhibit stratified structure.
