Kleinmann and Payne-Gaposchkin (1978) have published a study of the reddest stars in the Infrared Catalog of Neugebauer and Leighton (1969). They point out that the stars not known to be variable show a very strong concentration to the galactic plane and suggest that many of these stars may therefore be late-type supergiants. The present paper describes IR photometry and near-IR spectra obtained for a number of these objects. The data support the conjecture of Kleinmann and Payne-Gaposchkin. Nine of the 11 stars observed can definitely be classified as M supergiants.
