It is shown that statistically selected samples of binary galaxies contain an excess of E and SO galaxies. This suggests that such samples are contaminated by cluster members. Binary samples that are contaminated in this way will produce an overestimate of the mass/light ratio. On the other hand, mergers induced by dynamical friction will selectively remove those objects that have the heaviest halos. Surviving systems will therefore be biased in favor of binaries that started their existence with below average mass/light values.
