X-ray, optical and radio observations of the Ariel 5 X-ray source A1710-34 and its vicinity are reported. X-ray measurements of A1710-34 obtained by the 2.3 and 4.5 arcmin FWHM rotating modulation collimator on the SAS 3 observatory indicate a position of 17 h, 11 min, 1.3 sec RA and -33 deg, 59 arcmin, 32 arcsec deg, which is 2.2 arcmin from the most probable position determined by Ariel 5. The error circle of the present investigation contains seven stars in the European Southern Observatory quick blue survey plate, however no evidence exists to identify any of these stars with the X-ray source. A search for 2 cm radio emission in the vicinity of the X-ray source resulted in the detection of a weak emission during one observation session out of the three made. It is concluded that there is probably a variable 2-cm radio source in the vicinity of A1710-34.
