We discuss global scale variations of the thermospheric density and ionospheric electron content observed during the years of current solar minimum by CHAMP and other satellites. The variations to be presented include the annual variation and the day-to-day variability, and will be illustrated using a global or hemispheric mean parameter for either neutral density or electron content. In addition to the well-known December-June difference for the global mean density, equinox asymmetry and hemispheric differences can be also observed. We examine the timing of the largest hemispheric difference around the solstices, and that of the smallest difference around equinoxes. Finally we discuss the diagnostics of globe mean thermospheric changes and day-to-day variability using the ground-based incoherent scatter radar at Millstone Hill.
