We have analyzed sporadic metal atom layers in the MLT region above the Arecibo Observatory (18°N, 67°W) between June 2002 and the present. In this presentation, we have selected seven prominent sporadic layer events, and when possible if the enhancements are observed in more than one metal. These cover all seasons of the year. Several nights include observations of multiple atomic metals (K, Na, and/or Ca) as well as one or more atomic metal and a metallic ion (Ca+), and metals and metal ions along with radar-derived electron density. We have found that most of these sporadic layers descend at a rate that is compatible with the diurnal tide, although other dynamics are seen to work counter to the tide. Lower altitude layers, below 95 km, appear tied to temperature inversions (local maxima), which may be related to temperature-dependent neutral chemistry. In contrast, at higher altitudes, above 100 km, layers are often seen correlated with temperature minima and ion layers, indicating the importance of ionic chemistry. These observations are used as inputs to a model that includes dynamics, chemistry, and meteoric input to attempt to explain the processes by which sporadic layers form and progress in time and altitude.
