Vela satellites of orbit r = 18 earth-radii measured the intensity of less-than-1-MeV solar protons at two points in the plasma sheet and one in the north tail lobe during an 8-hour period on April 22, 1971. Quite substantial intensity differences were recorded among these three points. These differences are presumably related to different modes of access of energetic particles to these locations; one gradient-induced anisotropy which is anomalous in direction is explained by a macroscopic distortion in the surface of the plasma sheet adjacent to the north lobe. This sort of distortion can also account for a previously unexplained observation in another event, that of April 16, 1970.
